Social Media Is A Lie

I was scrolling through Instagram a few days ago and came across the page of a girl I once knew.
In her pictures, she was pretty. Her captions preached self-love, individuality, and acceptance. She had thousands of followers telling her how inspirational she was, how her messages of positivity had touched people, how she was a beautiful person.
This is when I realized how big of a lie social media really is.
I knew this girl.
And she is anything but inspirational, or positive, or even beautiful (well, on the inside anyways).
This girl is actually a bully. She is mean, and hateful. And she tears others down. She makes negative comments and picks away at others insecurities. She is not a nice or accepting person whatsoever.
But this post isn't about her.
It's about the lie she, and so many others portray.
Social media is a lie.
Don't get me wrong, I love it as much as the next person. I love taking photos, and posting comments, and interacting with my friends. But I hate the lies it creates around peoples lives.
People put forward their best selves, and their best attributes, and their best days, and never seem to acknowledge or post about the bad things, or the truth.
That model you follow, the one you wish you looked just like, she suffers from bulimia because she needs to look skinny to keep followers and sponsors.
That fitness inspo page you follow, they work out twice a day with personal trainers and follow a strict diet to get the body that you aspire to have so bad.
That person who travels the world, is lonely, and completely exhausted from long plane rides and sleeping in hostels.
That celebrity you think is perfect, has someone do their hair and makeup, and position them in the perfect lighting to get the perfect photo to post every day.
That person who's boosting your confidence with their photos, has destroyed someone else's confidence with their words.
Now, I'm not saying that everyone on social media is lying, or duping you.
So be careful, and have fun, and use social media to express your true self. But stop worrying about likes, and image, and branding. Because all it does it create even more lies for people to feed into.
Be yourself, and do what you love, but know your truth.
Because there's a lot more going on behind the scenes then the one second snapshot you see in a picture.
Just think about that.
